What does a star dedication mean?

Are purchased star names official?
No. The International Astronomical Union does not offer a commercial star-naming service and does not recognise names sold by commercial registries as official astronomical names. A certificate from a gift company documents that company’s dedication; it is not an official astronomical designation.
